Stretch marks are an integumentary atrophy acquired after the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibers in the skin’s dermis. There may also be a rupture of blood capillaries. They are common in varying sizes, regularities, and depths.
They are bilateral, meaning the striae tend to be distributed symmetrically on both sides.
Exception: stretch marks caused by topical corticosteroids or excessive hormone use during pregnancy.
